Iridescent and elaborate. These are the words most often used to express the beauty of the gold shimmering headdress. This gold tree-shaped shimmering headdress was unearthed in the village of Fangshen, Beipiao County-level City, Chaoyang City

This was a kind of gold headdress that was popular among the noble class during the Three Yan Dynasties. Gold peach leaves cling to the branches of the gold tree. The Murong, an ethnic tribe of the Xianbei people, created the headdress, which was different from the beaded shimmering headdress popular on the Central Plains.

It is recorded that Mohuba, the ancestor of the Murong chieftain yearned for a shimmering headdress, such as many young people of Han wore, and then imitated them by putting his hair up and wearing the headdress. His tribe called it buyao, which was later mispronounced to “Murong”.

The gold shimmering headdress was an emblem of beauty in the Former and Later Yan Dynasties, which were established by the Murong, and the Northern Yan Dynasty, which was established by the Feng Family.

The shimmering headdresses that the Murong made are quite elaborate and use mature techniques like engraving, pallet pinning, inlaying, pinching, and bead welding. They are often decorated with delicate pearls, jade, and lotuses made of thin gold pieces and agates.

The headdress with curved branches should be put into a lady’s hair coil. The bead pendant then lightly touches the lady’s embroidered collar and shakes with even slight movements. These headdresses used more mature techniques and higher quality materials and were more exquisite than those of the previous dynasty.

The scholarly community believes that the gold shimmering headdresses were initially introduced to northern China by the Xiongnu from the Western Regions. The Murong then inherited the culture of the northern Wuhuan, which had been deeply influenced by the Xiongnu, and created the tree-shaped shimmering headdress.

The tree-shaped shimmering headdress represents diverse cultures through geographical, ethnic, and other elements. As the Murong tribe was further influenced by Han people, the tree-shaped gold shimmering headdress developed into the Murong Xianbei shimmering headdress crown.

In Liaoning, gold Murong artifacts, as represented by the gold shimmering headdress, epitomize the flourishing trade along the Grassland Silk Road and the frequent cultural exchanges from the West to East between the third and fifth centuries.
