Waving water sleeves, painting faces and wearing costumes… Recently, Liaoning University welcomed 27 South Korean students participating in the “Chinese Bridge Hanyun Liaofeng” summer camp supported by the Chinese Ministry of Education’s Center for Language Education and Cooperation. Teachers and students from South Korea immersed themselves in the art of Peking Opera at the Institute of International Education, experiencing the endless charm of traditional Chinese culture.
Wang Zhipeng, a national first-class actor from Shenyang Peking Opera Theater, instructed the South Korean students about the fundamentals of Peking Opera, including vocal techniques, character portrayal and movements, allowing them to step into the vibrant world of this traditional art form.
Under the guidance of the artists from Shenyang Peking Opera Theater, the South Korean students tried on facial makeup and costumes to experience Peking Opera in a fun way. Some also showed a debut posture they had just learned, and took photos for memory.
Deeply impressed with Peking Opera, one of the South Korean students said excitedly, “Peking Opera embodies the essence of traditional Chinese culture. It’s unique and fantastic! This immersive experience gave us a more intuitive understanding of traditional Chinese culture.”
“This event not only provided a chance for South Korean youth to understand the art of Peking Opera, but also enhanced cultural exchanges and friendship between the two countries.” said Zhao Chunqiu, deputy dean of Institute of International Education at Liaoning University. “We will launch more exchange programs that enable foreign students to appreciate traditional Chinese culture, thereby promoting the dissemination of Chinese culture abroad,” Zhao added.
