Congolese International Student: Be a Messenger of Friendship Between China and Africa Through Medicine
2024-09-05

Inside the exhibition hall of the History Museum of China Medical University, there is a special guide named Muisha Mbikyo Bienvenue. He is a Congolese international student who is currently pursuing his PhD degree in cardiology at China Medical University. In order to provide a clear and captivating account of the university’s history, he has meticulously prepared a pinyin script and practiced it again and again. Now, he is able to eloquently recount the university’s “Red Doctor Spirit” in fluent Chinese.

Bienvenue, who has many Chinese friends, shares his personal aspirations in the medical field, his love for Chinese culture, and his deep knowledge of China and the history of the Communist Party of China. “The Chinese people are the most warm-hearted, open-minded, and inclusive,” Bienvenue said, expressing his willingness to become a messenger of friendship between China and Africa through medicine.

While studying at China Medical University, Bienvenue encountered Tai Shikun, a centenarian who also graduated from the same university. In 1964, Tai Shikun went to Tanzania to join the Chinese medical aid team to Africa. “The Chinese medical team members bring responsibility and love to different parts of the world, and leave their comfortable work environments and beloved families without any complaints or regrets. They are the true heroes in my eyes.” said Bienvenue.

In 2018, when the university staff asked Bienvenue if he could provide training on the target country’s national conditions, African culture, language, and other aspects for the Chinese medical aid team to Africa, he readily agreed and attended three training sessions consecutively. He stated, “Chinese doctors come to Africa to heal the wounded and rescue the dying, which has boosted my confidence in studying medicine. I am also willing to continue to serve China’s international medical aid teams, so that they can better and faster integrate into the new work environment.”

“China has constructed hospitals and dispatched multiple medical aid teams to my home country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is my hands-on experience of China’s endeavor to build a China-African community of health for all. After graduation, I will return to my homeland and contribute my medical expertise and proficiency in Chinese towards establishing a China-African community of health for all,” expressed Bienvenue gratefully.
