The classical Chinese dance “Robe Flows with Ruyi’s Rhythm”, originally choreographed by the Dance Academy of Shenyang Conservatory of Music, made a stunning appearance at the 2nd China Postgraduate “Glamor of Chinese Culture” Performance with its elegant dance movements.
The dance takes the traditional Chinese auspicious totem, “Ruyi” (a kind of decorative scepter), as its prop. It draws inspiration from a line from a classical Chinese poem “The jade ornaments sway with wrist movements, and the robe flows with Ruyi’s rhythm”. Through the dancer’s agile wrist movement, it showcases the glamor of the jade ornaments; by virtue of the elegant fluttering and flowing of the dancer’s robe, it highlights the elegance of the Ruyi, conveying sincere wishes for a prosperous era with the dance movements.

“Robe Flows with Ruyi’s Rhythm” was created by Li Min, a 2023-enrolled master’s student at the Dance Academy of Shenyang Conservatory of Music, and performed by Li Zitao, also a 2023-enrolled master’s student there. While creating and rehearsing the dance, the choreography team drew essence from classical images, refined every movement detail repeatedly, infusing the dance with rich classical charm and profound artistic expression. Finally, the dance deeply resonated with both judges and audiences.
“We use dance to convey the auspicious meaning of the Ruyi,” Li Min said. “Extracting elements from traditional Chinese culture for dance creation is our way of passing on this precious heritage.”
