In the field of international entomological research, Pakistani entomologist Abid Ali, a distinguished professor at Shenyang Normal University, enjoys an outstanding reputation. He has not only participated in scientific research related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, but has also published numerous significant research findings in internationally authoritative academic journals. Driven by his deep affection for Shenyang and his aspiration for the research environment here, Abid Ali has visited Shenyang, Liaoning Province seven times and ultimately chose to stay here, joining the faculty of Shenyang Normal University.
The campus of Shenyang Normal University is adorned with trees ablaze with rich colors, turning the campus into a picturesque scene. Strolling through it, Abid Ali said with deep feeling, “I love Shenyang. This city is my second hometown. Here, not only is life comfortable and convenient, but the research environment is also superior. There are also warm and friendly people and many like-minded old friends.”
In the laboratory, Abid Ali guides students to observe insect larvae extracted from the soil under a microscope. In the specimen room, he leads everyone in systematically classifying various insects according to their taxonomic orders and families. Beyond research guidance, he often takes international students from Pakistan to visit historical sites such as the Shenyang Imperial Palace, telling them the humanistic stories behind Shenyang.
At present, at the invitation of Abid Ali, students from three Pakistani universities are attending a training camp at Shenyang Normal University. They not only acquire professional knowledge and skills, but also immerse themselves in Chinese culture. Upon completing their studies, they will return home and serve as envoys for Sino-Pakistani cultural exchanges and science and technology cooperation, sharing what they have learned and experienced in Shenyang. Through this approach, Abid Ali hopes to further promote in-depth exchanges between the two countries in the fields of culture, science, and technology.
“The College of Life Science attaches great importance to international cooperation and boasts favorable research conditions, advanced experimental equipment, and a team of high-level experts. The college’s research achievements in fields such as insect ecology, biodiversity, integrated pest management, and sustainable agriculture occupy a leading position not only in China but also in Asia,” Abid Ali said. “The students here are diligent and eager to learn, and I am more than willing to impart my research findings to them.”
Currently, Abid Ali is collaborating with the College of Life Science on a research project entitled “The Relationship Between Spiders and Insects in Grassland Ecosystems.” The findings are expected to provide a scientific basis for reducing the use of chemical pesticides. Under his initiative, Shenyang Normal University has also established a joint laboratory dedicated to ecosystem restoration. “These collaborations not only promote the advancement of biological sciences, but also expand humanity’s understanding of the world,” said Abid Ali.
