Hamza, a Pakistani student at Liaoning Communication University, has a deep passion for Chinese opera and is particularly fascinated by the highly expressive Hualian (painted face role). Recently, at the warm invitation of Liu Yabin, an actor from Shenyang Pingju Opera Theatre, he got to experience this traditional art.
Upon entering the theatre, Hamza was struck by the magnificent costumes, the dazzling array of musical instruments, and the exquisite makeup. Under the guidance of professional instructors, he donned a black costume embroidered with gold thread, transforming into a spirited “foreign painted-face performer”. From basic stances to gestures and footsteps, Hamza experienced firsthand how Chinese opera performances, seemingly smooth and effortless, actually embody profound technical skills passed down through generations.
That afternoon, during a small showcase at the theatre, Hamza stepped onto the stage and confidently presented every move and gesture he had learned. At the final pose, the spirit conveyed through his gaze and posture won the applause of everyone present. This brief encounter, transcending language and culture, not only allowed Hamza to personally experience the unique charm of Chinese opera, but also became a vivid and heartwarming snapshot of cultural exchange between China and Pakistan.
