On April 1, 2024, Liaoning Academy of Materials held the inauguration ceremony for Herbert Gleiter International Institute (HGII), marking its official launch.

HGII is an important academic platform for the academy to systematically introduce internationally renowned scientist teams to conduct original academic explorations of materials and further enhance the academy’s international influence. In January this year, the academy hired Professor Herbert Gleiter as the full-time director of HGII, who is now responsible in the institute for introducing and accumulating world-class talents to carry out original and multidisciplinary research on cutting-edge nanomaterials. As a pioneer in international nanomaterial research, Professor Gleiter has long engaged in research on grain boundaries and interfaces in metals, and is honored as the “Father of Nanomaterials” by his international counterparts. He is an academician of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the US National Academy of Sciences and the US National Academy of Engineering. The first batch of scientists joining HGII come from Germany, France, the US, Russia, India and China, and many of them have already joined or will soon join the institute full time to conduct research.
