Amid multi-ethnic exchanges in ancient northern China, Liao porcelain stands as a remarkable cultural icon, witnessing interactions among diverse ethnic groups. In this episode of Craftsmanship in Liaoning, let’s dive into this intangible cultural heritage craft! Host Scarlett, together with Indonesian international student Feodora, joins hands with Sun Tianshu, the representative inheritor of the Liao porcelain-making technique, for an immersive hands-on experience.

Made from local pottery clay, the porcelain base takes shape through moulding and dot-glazing. Unlike Tang tri-colored pottery whose glazes blend into one another, Liao tri-colored pottery adopts separate dot-glazing with no colour mixing. Following the ancient method of “one color, one firing”, the porcelain features a clean palette of yellow, green and white, recreating the vast grasslands, fertile land and open sky cherished by the Khitan people.

Practicing this time-honoured craft has allowed Feodora from Indonesia to feel the subtle beauty and romance of traditional Chinese culture. Beauty knows no borders—people across the world can connect with the timeless charm of this millennium-old art.
