Construction of Dandong Section of the Great Wall National Cultural Park to Begin This Spring
Feb 16,2023

The east end of the Great Wall of China starts from the Hushan Great Wall, which makes the Dandong section unique in the Great Wall National Cultural Park system. It is reported that the preliminary preparations for three major projects, i.e., the Northeast Asian Frontier History and Culture Museum, the “Six Forts in Kuandian” Exhibition Hall, and the Aiyang City Site Exhibition Project, have been finished and the construction is to begin this spring.

The Hushan Great Wall, located on the bank of the Yalu River in the east of Dandong City, Liaoning Province, is the starting point of the east end of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty, which was built from the third year to the fifth year of the Ming Chenghua reign (1467-1469). In addition to the Hushan section, during the Ming Wanli reign (1573-1620), Liaodong expanded the border and built a branch-line Great Wall on the northeast side of the Hushan Great Wall, and along the Wall the “Six Forts in Kuandian” were built. They together constituted the military defense system of the lower reaches of the Aihe River (a large tributary of the Yalu River) at the eastern-most point of the Ming Great Wall.

Located in the new urban area in the south of Dandong, the Northeast Asian Frontier History and Culture Museum, with a total investment of 100 million yuan, is a multi-functional landmark building in Dandong with the Great Wall culture as its theme. As a comprehensive cultural facility, the museum covers a planning construction area of more than 13,000 square meters, with five exhibition halls and one multi-purpose hall. The exhibition area is 5,320 square meters, the collection area more than 1,700 square meters. And there are supporting facilities such as underground parking, technical workshops, equipment rooms, freight-handling halls, and storage rooms. The museum will be developed into a central exhibition site for the information about the cultural heritage of the Dandong section of the Great Wall, and its theme will be extended to cover the historical and cultural aspects of the Northeast Asian frontiers of China to create a comprehensive grand historical narrative. Its construction is to begin this spring, expected to be completed in 2025.
