New Round of Archaeological Investigation of Hongshan Culture Launched in Liaoning

On March 7th, the kick-off meeting of the 2023 special archaeological investigation on the Hongshan culture in Liaoning Province was held at the Niuheliang Site Museum in Chaoyang, marking the official launch of another round of special investigation focusing on the Hongshan culture in Liaoning. The investigation will extend to the Liao River basin.
At the meeting, experts from Renmin University of China and the Institute of Archaeology CASS (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences) provided training for the archaeologists involved in the research. The archaeologists also had the opportunity to observe on site some of the previously collected specimens of Hongshan cultural relics.

It is introduced that the special archaeological investigation on the Hongshan culture is a sub-project of the project “Study on the Process of Civilization of the Hongshan Society”. The investigation is an important task in the excavation and study of the Hongshan culture represented by the Niuheliang site and the restoration of Chinese prehistory, and will provide basic information for the future series of archaeological work to clarify the mechanism, path and characteristics of the social complexity of the Hongshan culture, the historical process of the birth and early development of civilizations, and its position in the process of the origin and development of the Chinese civilization.
