Harbor Seals in Liaohe Estuary Wetland Ready for Migration
May 07,2023

In the Liaohe Estuary Wetland in Panjin City, Liaoning Province, more than one hundred harbor seals from the western Pacific Ocean are gathering leisurely on the mudflats, with the seal pups growing stronger for long-distance journeys. In March every year, the harbor seals migrate thousands of miles to the Liaohe Estuary Wetland for a temporary stay to breed offspring and store up energy. In May, when the seal pups are able to travel in long distances, these seals will return to the western Pacific Ocean. Over the years, Liaoning Province has been restoring the wetland ecology and protecting the wetland diversity by continuously implementing the “Returning Fish Farms to the Wetlands” project, which has created a good ecological environment for the habitation and breeding of rare animals like harbor seals.
