On the evening of July 23, local time, Shenyang Daily Children’s Choir wins the gold award of children’s group at the 12th World Peace Choral Festival, with its closing ceremony held at the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna.

Shenyang Daily Children’s Choir, as a national A-class choir, has successively won gold awards in international choral competitions. At the same time, to implement the national policy of collaboration between the eastern and western regions, it has taken 97 children of two choirs from Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu to Shenyang for two consecutive summers since 2018. With free food and accommodation, the training by choral experts from the Shenyang Conservatory of Music is also voluntarily provided to help them win awards in national choral competitions and appear on the stage of CCTV Children Channel’s Spring Festival Gala Evening.

Together with Shenyang Daily Children’s Choir, Banqin, from Tielou Tibetan Town, Wenxian County, Gansu, and Cui Yunmeng, from Taiji Middle School in Yongjing County, Gansu Province, appear on the stage of the Golden Hall in Vienna that they’ve dreamed about, singing the song “Children living in the mountains” of their heart, “with the plantains at feet and the wild chrysanthemums on the roadside, there is a path up the mountain leading to the dream...”

Walking off the stage, the Tibetan girl Banqin cannot be more excited, “Mother Yu has broadened my eyes with Lanzhou, Beijing and Vienna in succession within a year. But my eyes are still too small to hold even one drop of tears when I want to express my excitement and gratitude to her.” As the words come out, her eyes are wet with tears.

Mother Yu in the mouth of the children is Yu Hui, Shenyang Daily Children Choir’s leader. At the invitation of the China Journalists Association, the Liaoning Journalists Association and Shenyang Daily helped Dongba Middle School in Wenxian County, Gansu, set up the first children’s choir for left-behind children around the country last July. Yu Hui and the chorus teachers traveled from Shenyang across 2,400 kilometers to Wenxian County, to coach the choir and help rehearse. Hard work pays off and the choir turns from a cocoon into a butterfly in that this group of children with zero experience from the very beginning board the stage of Gansu TV and CCTV successively. On behalf of children living in the mountains of Wenxian County, Banqin is lucky to become a member of the choir that can perform in the Golden Hall.

By the Danube River, Cui Yunmeng sings “Flowers” and slowly pours a bottle of Yellow River water brought from her hometown into the Danube, and then fills a bottle of water from the Danube to take back to hometown. She says, “This is the Danube water merged with the Yellow River water. No matter the children of the Yellow River or of the Danube, we all love peace. Just like the theme of the World Peace Choral Festival, Chinese culture and world culture are as deeply interconnected as the river waters.”

The World Peace Choral Festival was born in 2010 and originates from the advocacy of world peace by the Vienna Boys’ Choir, the national treasure of Austria. It is a large-scale international choral exchange event in the world firstly themed with peace and participated by choirs from all over the world, one of the most important choral festivals in the world, and the only choral festival supported by the United Nations.
