Decade-Long Surge: Liaoning’s Trade with Countries Along the Belt and Road Up by 45.5%

The year 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Data from Shenyang Customs reveals that over the past decade, trade between Liaoning and countries along the Belt and Road has grown increasingly robust. The import and export value surged from 202.78 billion yuan in 2013 to 294.96 billion yuan in 2022, representing a cumulative growth of 45.5%.

According to statistics, in the first half (H1) of 2023, Liaoning’s trade with countries along the Belt and Road demonstrated a robust upward trend. The import and export value reached 148.44 billion yuan, registering a year-on-year increase of 9.7%, surpassing the overall growth rate by 8.3%.

In H1 2023, Liaoning’s exports of intermediate products to countries along the Belt and Road, including flat panel display modules, electronic components, automotive spare parts, and textile yarn, experienced remarkable growth rates of 164.4%, 89%, 31.9%, and 5.6%, respectively. Additionally, imports of energy and agricultural products from these countries also saw substantial increases of 3.2% and 52.5%, respectively.

In terms of transportation, Liaoning saw a respective increase of 9.9% and 6.6% in imports and exports with countries along the Belt and Road through waterways and railways in H1 2023. Notably, imports and exports by road transportation soared by 97.1%, surpassing the overall growth rate for these countries by 87.4 percentage points, maintaining a remarkable growth rate of over 70% for five consecutive months.

In recent years, private enterprises have been increasingly enthusiastic about participating in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. In H1 2023, Liaoning’s private enterprises imported and exported 90.62 billion yuan with countries along the Belt and Road, a year-on-year increase of 19.1%. This accounted for 61.1% of Liaoning’s total imports and exports with these countries during the same period, marking a 4.8-percentage-point increase in their share and contributing to a 10.8-percentage-point growth in Liaoning’s overall trade with these countries.
