Shaded by green trees, readers wander in the maze of plants, as if in the real-life “Wizard of Oz”. This is not a forest castle but the first dreamlike forest library in Shenyang - Times Library.

Times Library, located in Dadong District, Shenyang, is built on the former site of Shenyang Dongmaoku, which was built in 1950s. The 5,500 square meters of comprehensive cultural space integrating culture, art, leisure and so on, transforms the industrial memory of Shenyang yesterday into a cultural landmark of Shenyang today.

Walking into the Times Library, what one sees in the first place is the “Reading Sanctuary” built with wooden structures and decorated with green plants and white ornaments. Readers are welcomed to wander through the maze with Chinese medicine herbal plants, or bond with the nature in the tree-house reading area. There is a collection of tens of thousands of books in the fields of politics, art, culture, science and technology, etc. Supported by information technology, services like searching for, borrowing, and returning books can be experienced by readers to realize the transformation from being “always with a book in hand” to “with a screen at hand”, which satisfies the reading needs of people to be efficient and convenient at present.

In the Times Library are broad reading areas, a small theatre, other expanded reading space, a cafe as well as the Siku Quanshu reading space, to create a comprehensive space for visitors and readers to read books, visit the building and have some leisure.

The children script entertainment is a part of the Times Library Educational Summer Camp, among which are other cultural activities like interviews and dramas. Through reading picture books, performing stories, making handcrafts and so on, children are appealed to fall in love with reading. This summer in the Times Library, children will have a Harry Potter themed night, study plants classification, learn about ancient people’s tips of easing summer heat, watch the shadow puppet show which is an intangible heritage, paint and make a round fan by hands, and inherit the leaf rubbing art... They will stay in the “Wizard of Oz” and be immersed in a reading world.
