Liu Mingzhu is 24 years old. In September 2023, she graduated from Liaodong University in Dandong, and secured a position in a public institution on Zhangzidao Island through an exam, with less than a year of work experience in her new role. When she initially applied for the position, she was filled with curiosity and desire for this small island embraced by the sea. She discovered her special connection with this beautiful island of blue skies and clear waters, as Zhangzidao Island is known as the “Pearl of the Yellow Sea,” with attractions like Pearl Square, Pearl Park, and Pearl Hotel… and her given name is also Mingzhu (meaning pearl in Chinese).
Upon arriving at Zhangzidao Island, Liu was immediately assigned to the grassroots unit as a key player. Currently, she serves as a cultural and tourism clerk at the People’s Government of Zhangzidao Town in Changhai County in charge of culture, tourism, and sports, and she is also responsible for handling various difficult issues through the “Town Mayor’s Hotline”. Liu has an outgoing personality and was enthusiastic about various group activities during her school days. However, she realized that grassroots work is a significant test and a training ground after entering society. She experienced insomnia and hair loss due to stress, yet she has no regrets. She feels fortunate to have the opportunity to work on Zhangzidao Island. She has seen the positive energy radiating from the people of the island, recognized their optimistic and simple yet admirable virtues, and understood the spirit of Zhangzidao—“daring to lead the tide and being pioneers.”
Zhangzidao Town is located in Changhai County, Dalian, the only island border county in China. Working on an island requires a long process of adapting to different climates, diets, and customs from her hometown. It is even more challenging to endure loneliness and root herself in coastal life. Liu says, “I am willing to settle down and build a career here.” This is her heartfelt wish. She loves the sea and the island, and hopes to become the “modern-day Mulan on the sea” one day.
