In Liaoyang City, Liaoning Province, a sport has gained widespread popularity, particularly among a group of seniors with an average age of over 60. They wield skating poles in their hands, ride on single-blade ice sleds, and propel themselves forward with swift and graceful motions. This unique sport, known as single-blade ice sled skating, or “Single-Leg Donkey” (dantuilyu in Chinese), holds a nostalgic significance for people born in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s in Liaoyang. The single-blade ice sled is not only a “toy” under their feet, but also a cherished memory of their youth.
Zhang Qiguang is the captain of the Liaoyang Four Seasons “Single-Leg Donkey” Elite Team, a role which involves organizing a team consisting of hundreds of “Single-Leg Donkey” enthusiasts on a daily basis. Members of the team depart together, line up in relays, attend racing competitions, and practice crossing obstacles… Over the icy expanse, they perform tricks, alter formations, and raise their arms to cheer, attracting many citizens to stop and admire the spectacle.
Not only are the skills on feet difficult to master, but making a single-blade ice sled also requires great efforts. The craft of making single-blade ice sleds has been well preserved over the years, and many types of ice sleds have been innovated, obtaining multiple patents. Today, the single-blade ice sled has transcended its role as a mere childhood toy, embodying Liaoyang’s folk culture, winter living skills, and the wisdom of the elder generations.
