The 1st Asia Selection of the Premiere Opera Foundation International Vocal Competition was held in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. Cheryl Studer, a world-renowned soprano and Grammy Award winner, was invited to serve as a jury member. During her stay in Shenyang, she also conducted master classes for the faculty and students of the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, imparting her valuable experience in operatic singing.
This was Cheryl Studer’s first visit to Shenyang, and she praised the city as a livable place with a beautiful environment and fresh air. Shenyang boasts ancient palaces and attractive modern buildings, especially the Shengjing Grand Theatre, where she worked for several consecutive days. When lit up at night, the theatre resembles a giant diamond, which left a deep impression on her. “My favorite Shenyang delicacy is dumplings. Dishes like chicken ribs and Guobaorou (crispy sweet and sour pork) are also distinctive and unforgettable,” said Cheryl Studer.
Although this was Cheryl Studer’s first visit to Shenyang, she had long heard about the strength of the city’s musical talents. “I once asked my Chinese students, ‘Where are the best singers in China?’ Their answer was Shenyang. During my time working here, I found that to be true. Several finalists in this competition came from Shenyang.” In recent days, Cheryl Studer has worked closely with the organizer of the competition, the Shenyang Conservatory of Music. She spoke highly of the Conservatory’s educational standards. “Shenyang Conservatory of Music boasts excellent teaching facilities and quality. I know this conservatory has nurtured a large number of Chinese musical talents, and I hope to strengthen cooperation and exchange with the Shenyang Conservatory of Music in the future.”
Cheryl Studer believes that the Asia Selection of the Premiere Opera Foundation International Vocal Competition has brought forth a number of outstanding vocal talents with exceptionally superb vocal qualities and highly refined singing techniques. “Vocal competitions not only cultivate the public’s appreciation of vocal music and their artistic taste but also enhance Shenyang’s international reputation. I hope the next Asia Selection of the Premiere Opera Foundation International Vocal Competition will continue to be held in Shenyang,” said Cheryl Studer.
