China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration recently released a Catalogue of 195 Cultural Relics Prohibited from Exit Exhibition. Among them is Waiting at a Ferry in the Summer, a celebrated masterpiece by the Five Dynasties painter Dong Yuan, now housed at the Liaoning Provincial Museum.

Created during the Southern Tang Dynasty of the Five Dynasties, this handscroll of landscape in ink and color on silk measures 50 centimeters in height and 320 centimeters in length. The painting depicts the level-distance landscape of Jiangnan, with rolling hills, winding sandbanks, lush summer trees, ferries crossing the water, and travelers waiting along the riverbank. Through its tranquil composition and atmospheric depth, the work captures the poetic spirit of southern Chinese landscapes. Widely regarded as a milestone in the history of Chinese landscape painting, the scroll is considered a defining masterpiece of the Southern School tradition. Leveraging digital technology, the Liaoning Provincial Museum has now transformed this rarely exhibited national treasure into a digital collectible accessible to the public.

The painting occupies an exceptional place in Chinese art history. Dong Yuan, recognized as a founding master of the Southern School, established the aesthetic paradigm of Jiangnan landscape painting through this work. The scroll was first recorded in the Xuanhe Catalogue of Paintings during the Northern Song Dynasty, later entered the imperial collection of Yuan emperor Wenzong, and was authenticated by renowned connoisseur Ke Jiusi. In the Ming Dynasty, the influential painter and theorist Dong Qichang inscribed and authenticated the work before it entered the Qing imperial collection, where it remained treasured by successive royal households. After passing through various collectors in modern times, the painting was eventually acquired by the Liaoning Provincial Museum. Its provenance is extensively supported by historical documentation, seals, and inscriptions, making it one of the most important reference works for the authentication of Dong Yuan’s surviving originals.

One of the painting’s greatest artistic achievements lies in Dong Yuan’s innovative brushwork techniques. He employed his signature “hemp-fiber texture strokes” to render the soft, layered contours of the mountains, while dense moss dots evoke rich vegetation and thriving woodland. Scattered cottages nestled among bamboo groves and trees create a ferry scene that feels both lively and tranquil. Executed in refined and understated colors, the scroll conveys drifting mist, rolling clouds, and rising moisture, vividly bringing to life the integrated beauty of Jiangnan’s mountains and waterways. The work perfectly embodies Dong Yuan’s artistic philosophy of portraying the true landscapes of Jiangnan rather than pursuing exaggerated dramatic forms.

To help wider audiences appreciate this textbook-level national treasure, the Liaoning Provincial Museum has officially launched a digital collectible edition of Waiting at a Ferry in the Summer. Faithfully preserving the original appearance of the artwork, the museum employed 3D modeling technology to recreate the painting in high definition, revealing the texture of the ancient silk and the subtle layers of ink brushwork in remarkable detail. The digital edition supports immersive viewing and zoom functionality, allowing audiences to closely examine Dong Yuan’s signature hemp-fiber strokes and moss-dot techniques. At the same time, blockchain technology provides permanent certification, tamper-proof authentication, and proof of uniqueness, offering collectors an exclusive digital certificate linked to this iconic masterpiece of Southern School landscape painting.
