Taiwan is my hometown and Shenyang is my home

At the Urology Outpatient Department of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, the attending physician Mao Minghuan is receiving a patient. To the patient’s surprise, the doctor who speaks to him with a genuine Shenyang accent turned out to be from Taiwan.

Mao Minghuan, who was born in Taipei, chose to apply for the clinical medicine major of China Medical University in the college entrance examination in 2004. He has been bonded to Shenyang since then. “China Medical University is one of the top in China. It has produced many medical experts, which makes me yearn for it.” Mao Minghuan said. After 7 years of study, Mao Minghuan was admitted to the doctoral program of Professor Wang Ping, vice president of China Medical University.

“I didn’t return to Taiwan, so I stayed in Shenyang alone during the 2008 winter vacation, which was a first time experience for me.” Mao Minghuan was ready to spend the Spring Festival alone when he saw his classmates packing and going home. “What surprised me was that Zhang Lei, a classmate from Fushun, knew I was in Shenyang alone and came back from home on the third day of the Spring Festival to accompany me. He also brought a large bag of food called ‘sugar triangle’ made by his mother. Now each time I see the food, I would think of our Spring Festival together. It always gives me a kind of warmth and reminds me that someone is caring about me all the time.”

After graduation with a doctoral degree, Mao Minghuan chose to stay in Shenyang. “Here I have my work to realize my dream of saving the dying and healing the wounded, my teachers who helped me grow up, and the one I love all my life.” Now, Mao Minghuan’s other identity is “Liaoning’s son-in-law”. He has become a father of two lovely babies.

“Taiwan is my hometown and Shenyang is my home.” Mao Minghuan said that he had fully integrated into Shenyang and lived the life he wanted. “I enjoy visiting museums in Liaoning with my family, wandering along the corridor of history, and feeling the long history and splendid culture of this great land at close range.”

Gained care and warmth even when he is away from his hometown, Mao Minghuan is also giving back to the city he loves deeply in his own way. As a surgeon, he knew the importance of blood for surgery, so he became a voluntary blood donor, which encourages his colleagues and friends to participate, too. During the epidemic, he volunteered to participate in the vaccination and COVID test for many times. In April this year, he again volunteered to participate in the support work of Shenyang Yellow Code Hospital, and worked at the front line of epidemic control with his colleagues until all the patients were cured and discharged.

Last year, Mao Minghuan’s younger sister also crossed the Taiwan Strait to Shenyang to study with his support. “I want to thank that decision I made 18 years ago, which allowed me to see the future and live the life I yearned for in Liaoning.” Mao Minghuan said, “I have witnessed the revitalization and development of Shenyang, and Shenyang has also witnessed my growth in the past 18 years. Here, I have not only realized my dream, but also gained family, friendship and love. I can’t be separated from Shenyang. This is my home.”
