The classical dance Musicians created and rehearsed by Shenyang Conservatory of Music took the stage of CCTV. The dance, based on Musicians, the mural painting of the Liao Dynasty tombs, explored the profound and diverse culture of musical dance of Liao Dynasty. The choreographic work has filled the gap of musical dance of Liao Dynasty by recreating the vivid scenes of singing and dancing presented in the ancient mural painting through San Yue music style, which shows the cultural inclusiveness of multi-ethnic community in North China and the unique features of the unsophisticated and bold Khitan tribe.
Enriching in content, the mural paintings of the Liao Dynasty tombs enjoy great historic and cultural value by offering a comprehensive scroll of economic, cultural, artistic, folk, religious life of Liao Dynasty. With its unique composition and vivid characters, Musicians presents an artistic expression full of ethnic features and folk customs of the time, while its entertaining content reflects the social life, cultural identity, political complexion and more dimensions of Liao Dynasty.


The classical dance Musicians creates and designs its characters and costumes based on the original mural painting with recreation and integration of modern aesthetics. The musical dance has impressed a large audience with brand-new style since its debut. Musicians has made a tentative step to restore and recreate dance in Liao Dynasty so as to fill the gap, disseminate historical and cultural symbols of Liaoning, and more importantly, preserve intangible cultural heritage and inherit outstanding traditional Chinese culture.
Different from majority of the graceful and gentle classical dance, Musicians impresses audience with a brand-new beauty. Dressed in bright clothes and adorned with flowers on heads, the dancers put more emphasis on strong rhythms with shaking shoulders, swinging sleeves, and quick short steps on half sole to show the bold and unconstrained personalities of ancient ethnic minorities.
Musicians has won the Gold Award for Play Creation in the 9th Liaoning “Lotus Award” Dance Competition in 2022 and been selected for the final evaluation of the 13th China “Lotus Award” Classical Dance Competition. To be better prepared for the competition, rehearsals were continued and revision was done for the unique style of musical dance of Liao Dynasty.
