The exhibition “Cross-cultural Exchange in Art: The Artistic World Created by Giuseppe Castiglione, A Court Painter in the Qing Dynasty” was recently held at the Shenyang Museum in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province, which features 45 pieces of artwork by Giuseppe Castiglione, his students, and successors.
More than 300 years ago, the Italian painter Giuseppe Castiglione arrived in China from distant Europe. Proficient in Western painting techniques and deeply knowledgeable about Chinese culture, he depicted the exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and Western cultures with his brush.
The exhibition is divided into three parts: “Harmony of All Things Brings Vitality”, “Court Chronicles: History in Brushstrokes”, and “Fusion of Chinese and Western Painting for New Trends”, vividly showcasing Castiglione’s artistic world and the social customs and historical events at that time.
This exhibition has attracted audience from China and abroad. Enamul, an Indian student at Shenyang Normal University, was impressed by Castiglione’s exquisite work. “I love the painting ‘Peacock’, the feathers of the peacock in the painting are clear and lifelike, which is awe-inspiring,” Enamul said.
