During the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, China Medical University was commissioned by the Northeast Military Region of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army to enroll 607 patriotic young people and form the “Military Medical Class”. The students went to Bei’an, where they treated wounded soldiers of the Chinese People’s Volunteers in bitterly cold conditions, voluntarily donated blood, and joined public health campaigns to counter bacteriological warfare. In 1952, the students returned to Shenyang to complete their undergraduate studies. When they graduated and received military ranks in 1956, they became some of the People’s Republic of China’s first commissioned military doctors with bachelor’s degrees. Many went on to serve in border regions and at the grassroots level. The class also produced five academicians, whose lifelong dedication to medicine has left an enduring mark on the memory of their times.
