Shenyang Becomes the Most Important Production Base of BMW Group Worldwide
Feb 23,2023

Recently, an All New Fully Electric BMW i3 eDrive 40L rolled off the production line of BMW iFACTORY Tiexi Lydia site, marking the cumulative production of 5 million cars at BMW Shenyang Production Base and the beginning of a new chapter in the BMW Group’s electrification journey.

In 2003, BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. (BBA) was established, and since 2010, it has invested more than 94.5 billion RMB into its projects in China, creating more than 26,000 high-quality jobs. During the previous year, the all-new BMW i3 was launched; BBA Plant Dadong Extension was successfully completed; BBA Plant Lydia site was officially put into operation; BMW’s new battery production project was signed and settled.

For the BMW Group, the production of 5 million cars at Shenyang Production Base is a special achievement. At present, the BMW Shenyang Production Base integrates R&D, procurement and production, with the annual production capacity increasing to 830,000 units. It is the largest BMW production base worldwide and one of the most important centers for the new energy vehicle (NEV) market. Dr. Milan Nedeljković, BMW AG Board Member for Production, said, the rolling off of the 5 millionth vehicle once again underlines the importance of Shenyang Production Base to the BMW Group. At the same time, Shenyang Plants are all set for electrification and will play a crucial role in the future.

The launch of the fully electric BMW i3 at the newest production site of Shenyang Production Base shows that BMW e-mobility ramp-up is well underway. In recent years, to achieve the electrification transformation of the whole brand and all product ranges, the BMW Group is establishing a production system towards future, with “Lean, Green and Digital” as the focus and BMW iFACTORY as the overall production strategy.

Currently, the BMW Shenyang Plants are empowered by digital technologies, with cutting-edge technologies such as 5G communication, VR and AI being widely adopted. Over 100 AI applications have been implemented, and all plants are capable of switching to all-electric, plug-in hybrid or ICE production on demand. Last June, the official opening of Plant Tiexi Lydia site, the first plant designed for NEV production for BMW Group worldwide, further solidifies BMW Shenyang Production Base as an excellent implementation example of the BMW iFACTORY strategy.

It is reported that the BMW Group is marching towards a future that is Electric, Digital and Circular while being “At Home in China”. The five millionth locally-produced BMW marks a significant milestone in its journey to the future e-mobility.
