Recently, the world’s first intelligent distributed protection and control system based on medium-voltage carrier communication technology has been put into operation in Fushun City, Liaoning Province. This system offers a “Chinese model” with low cost and high reliability for power transmission safety in high fire-risk areas worldwide.

Led by State Grid Liaoning Electric Power Supply Co., Ltd., this system integrates medium-voltage carrier communication technology into a distributed protection and control system for the first time. It effectively addresses real-time challenges: communication delays are reduced from hundreds of milliseconds to under 5 milliseconds, communication distances exceed 5 kilometers with a 2 Mbps bandwidth, and multi-terminal concurrent communication is supported.

In the event of short-circuit faults, the main circuit breaker isolates the fault within 200 milliseconds, the branch circuit breaker achieves zero-delay response, and the non-fault area automatically restores within 200 milliseconds, thus accurately eliminating wildfire hazards.

Its operation signifies that China has leaped ahead of the world in the intelligent protection of power distribution networks, building a new model characterized by “low cost and high reliability”, and simultaneously addressing the challenges of wildfire prevention and distributed energy access.
